My diamond blue light shines brightly on a black light, does that mean that it is false???
When I was in Cosmic Bowling with my friends, my diamond ring shone bright blue under black light, and the diamond of my friend was not bright at all. What does it mean when a diamond glows under a black light? Does that say that is false, or is there something different about a diamond that glows under a black light?
The bright under black light (UV) is called fluorescence. Fluorescence is a form of luminescence that results from the interaction between the energy of light and atoms of the diamonds. Traces of impurities within the diamond, such as nitrogen, boron and, possibly, hydrogen, diamonds because of fluorescence. About 35 percent of gem quality diamonds emit a certain amount of fluorescence. This phenomenon is best seen under ultraviolet light (UV) lamp. However, you can also see the fluorescence to sunlight due to the high concentration of UV. Fluorescence usually disappears when you remove the source of UV rays. The most common color of fluorescence of the diamond is blue, shown in a variety intensities. About one percent of diamonds can fluoresce in a variety of other colors as well.
